Client Overview
This public health data provider develops software solutions that help health agencies collect, report, and analyze critical public health data. Their platforms support disease prevention and community health efforts by improving data accuracy, streamlining workflows, and enabling informed decision-making.
Challenge
The client was seeking a path to scalable growth and automated compliance management.
- Legacy Environment Constraints: Health data provider was utilizing a data center vendor with VMware to host and manage their infrastructure.
- Cost and Compliance Limitations: This on-premises environment proved to be cost-limiting to their sales growth. Furthermore, maintaining regulatory compliance required manual, resource-intensive intervention.
- Project Goal: The client engaged with us to migrate and re-factor their development and production environments to an AWS cloud-based solution.
Solution
Caylent proposed an on-premises to AWS migration strategy.
- Migration Strategy: The strategy leveraged lessons learned by the health data provider during a proof of concept deployment of their applications in AWS using Amazon ECS.
- Compliance Focus: The solution focused on utilizing Infrastructure as Code and serverless computing tools to address the components required for compliance in an automated manner.
TCO Analysis
We focused on maximizing TCO gains through strategic optimization and program participation.
- Optimization & Reporting: AWS Billing metrics and AWS Trusted Advisor reports were generated to determine if any resources needed to be descoped or lowered.
- Compliance Tooling: During the initial implementation phase, cost reduction steps were taken by utilizing Caylent-authored compliance tools to help with compliance reporting.
- AWS Program Benefits: The health data provider participated in the AWS Migration Acceleration Program (MAP), providing an additional amount of cost savings in the form of service credits to drive even higher TCO gains.
Results
The project successfully delivered a secure, scalable, and compliant environment.
- Compliance Achievement: The system was re-architected to meet and exceed NIST (National Institute of Standards and Technology) regulatory requirements.
- Automation and Efficiency: By leveraging Infrastructure as Code and serverless computing, compliance components were addressed in an automated manner. This approach reduces resource utilization and costs while ensuring continual and predictable compliance with regulatory requirements.
