Anthropic's Claude Family

  • Claude Opus: The most powerful and thoughtful model. Use this for complex tasks that require in-depth reasoning, such as analyzing detailed legal documents or lengthy financial reports from your internal archives. The latest model in this family is Claude 4 Opus.
  • Claude Sonnet: A great balance of smarts and speed. This is your go-to for everyday business tasks, such as summarizing meeting notes, answering employee questions from an HR handbook, or drafting customer support emails. The latest model is Claude 4 Sonnet.

Preparing and Storing Your Internal Documents

Document preparation is critical for retrieval accuracy. The process involves:

  • Document Standardization: Handle multiple formats (PDF, DOCX, HTML) while preserving content structure and metadata
  • Metadata Enrichment: Add tags for department, update date, and access permissions
  • Storage Organization: Structure documents in Amazon S3 with logical hierarchy

Implementing Semantic Search with Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases

Amazon Bedrock Knowledge Bases provides integrated semantic search capabilities by combining Amazon Kendra with foundation models. This approach simplifies the RAG implementation by handling the orchestration between search and generation.

Step 1: Create a Knowledge Base in Amazon Bedrock

1. Navigate to Amazon Bedrock in the AWS Console

2. Select "Knowledge Bases" from the left navigation menu

3. Click "Create" and then “Knowledge Base with Kendra GenAI Index”

4. Enter a name (e.g., "company-internal-knowledge")

5. Optionally add a description

6. Select the option to create and use a new service role

7. Select the option to create a new Kendra GenAI Index

8. Optionally add tags and then click on “Create Knowledge Base”

Step 2: Add Data Sources to Kendra

1. In the "Data source" section, click "Add data source"

2. Select "Amazon S3" as the source type

3. Enter a name for your data source(e.g., "company-internal-knowledge-data-source")

4. Specify the default language of source documents

5. Choose "Create a new service role" for automatic IAM configuration

6. Configure S3 settings:

  • S3 URI: Browse and select your bucket
  • (e.g., s3://company-knowledge-base/)
  • Include patterns: Add specific paths like policies/, technical-docs/
  • Exclude patterns: Optionally exclude temporary or draft folders

7. Choose how often you want your data to be updated

8. Finish creating the data source 

9. After creation is complete, click “Sync now”

Step 3: Interact with your knowledge base

1. Open the "Chat with your document" tab

2. Under "Configurations" and "Model" select the LLM of your choice and interact with the model and your internal knowledge base through prompts
